Three for Free: Safety & Risk Management Summit

Proposed 3 Hours Domain C: Risk Management

Join MPI for this timely and necessary summit on safety and security in the meeting and event industry. It had never been more important for meeting professionals to embrace their roles when it comes to emergency preparedness and safety around the experiences they create. Whether it’s a board meeting for 12 or a city-wide for 25,000, meeting professionals across the globe are discovering that while they continue to drive behavior change and business results for their organizations and participants, their number one job is the safety of everyone onsite—from participants and staff to vendors and sponsors.

During this summit, you will meet three of the industry’s preeminent experts in different areas of emergency preparedness, risk management and security, as we explore three areas of particular concern for meeting professionals worldwide: crisis communications, risk management and cybersecurity.

Cybersecurity: Protecting Your Data

Speaker: MaryAnne Bobrow

Cybersecurity--it is not a matter of if, but when, you will confront it. If governments and the movie industry can be hacked, so can you. Tech experts tell you how it can happen, but not the what, who and how of risk, exposure and liability. Are you prepared for a data breach? Explore the legal, insurance and planning aspects of your event that require safeguards to protect against this growing problem.

Learner Outcomes:

  • Discuss liability on the part of the planner, the sponsoring organization and the venue.
  • Discover what protections and other proactive activities should occur and who should take them.
  • Determine how all parties can work together to ensure due diligence.

Crisis Communications: Reaching Those Who Matter When it Matters

Speaker: Alex Plaxen

Be prepared for the unexpected. It’s an often-used phrase that is often times confusing. After all, how can we prepare for what we don’t expect to happen, particularly in terms of communicating? The answer ultimately comes down to developing a communications plan that includes three things; auditing your vulnerabilities, training your spokespeople, and establishing means of communicating. We’ll answer your burning questions about how to use social media when it really matters. The basic steps of effective crisis communications are not difficult, but they require advance work to minimize risk and damage. Learn how to create a communications plan for your event and make critical decisions for your organization. Never be caught unprepared again!

Learner Outcomes:

  • Discover the results of a poorly developed, poorly executed, or non-existent plan.
  • Understand the basic principles of creating a crisis communications plan and effective emergency management.
  • Learn best practices for internal and external communications during a crisis.

Risky Business:  Keeping Participants Safe in an Unsafe World

Speaker: Lori Pugh Marcum

Risk management plans are living documents that need to be updated and shared on a regular basis.  How can you ensure that your policies and procedures are current, what type of crisis and risks should you be planning for, and what are best practices in this area?

Learner Outcomes:

  • Discover key questions you need to ask your partners to inform your risk management plans.
  • Review best practices in risk management planning.
  • Understand the different types of crisis you need to prepare for.
