6 hour course

Cost: $505 member/$705 non-member

Program Overview

The Certified Meeting Professional designation is a must-have for event organizers, designers, and strategists who want to demonstrate their professionalism to employers, peers and clients. But the test is challenging, and meeting professionals who want to pass it must prepare in various ways—including self-study, skills gap, needs analysis, and prep courses. Join Nick Estrada, CMP, CAE, for this open-floor and interactive CMP Academy class that will help you feel confident going into the exam room with best practices as outlined in the CMP-International Standards (CMP-IS).

Learn proven study methods, test-taking tips and other tools from an association and higher education professional. Gain insight into how you cannot just read the questions, but how to read between the lines and contextually analyze this logic-based exam. No matter where you are in the process (including recertification), this course will help prepare you for the exam and apply standard practices it on the job.

You will learn key concepts behind the CMP-IS and how to apply them at work, discuss best practices for preparing for and taking the exam and develop a personal study path based on where you are in the process. The study materials for this session are the referenced recommended reading: 9th Edition Convention Industry Council (CIC) Manual, 6th Edition Professional Meeting Management and the Events Industry Council’s APEX Glossary.

Note: This is not your standard study course! We do not work to provide sample tests and memorization tools – because at the end of the day, the CMP and its questions are as unique as YOU. Instead, we want to give you the tools and knowledge to help you navigate it with ease and answer each question with confidence.

*This course was recorded on March 20, 2024*

Domain A: Strategic Planning

Cost: $305 member/$405 non-member

Program overview:

The meeting industry's focus on sustainability is changing. As planners, part of that means being able to answer questions from chief sustainability officers and executive-level stakeholder(s) and clients, particularly those whose focus is organizational support of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting. The industry has been talking about sustainability in events for years and many of us have implemented small changes, but now we have to go further and redefine how we plan. MPI's newest micro-certificate dives into specifics around sustainability, government regulations, community impact, food & beverage, carbon offsets and tracking and supply chain engagement. Get the boost you need to start implementing real change in your planning process.

What you’ll learn

  • Gain a deeper understanding of how to imbed sustainability in your planning processes.
  • Use tools for success around several key areas of event, including carbon emissions, food and beverage, single-use items reduction, supplier engagement and social impact.
  • Align your event sustainability goals with the overarching goals of your organization or clients.

Target Audience

This training is designed for operational staff working in event environments, including program managers, team leads, line managers, day-of event support, security personnel and venue staff. By completing this training, operational staff will emerge as welfare champions, ready to create inclusive event environments for those most vulnerable to distress, overwhelm, meltdowns and shutdowns. They will be better equipped to identify and respond to signs of distress, provide appropriate support and make a positive impact on the overall attendee experience.

Note: This training does not replace specialized mental health training for clinical professionals or crisis management training for specialized security personnel.

Program Overview
Twenty percent(+) of the global population is neurodivergent and 25% of people have mental health conditions that can make them especially vulnerable to distress or difficulties in an event environment. Neu Project research shows that event operational teams and venue staff often lack the necessary knowledge and/or confidence to effectively support attendees who are neurodivergent. This knowledge gap creates a significant challenge as these attendees may face difficulties navigating the event, experiencing overwhelm or not receive the inclusive and supportive environment they need to fully engage and participate.

Without proper understanding, awareness and practical skills, operational staff may inadvertently contribute to a less inclusive and accommodating atmosphere, leading to potential negative experiences for the aforementioned communities. This lack of support can not only impact attendees well-being, it can also reduce the efficacy of the investment in events and undermine both the experiential and business outcomes associated with those investments (time, money, effort).

Program Objectives

By the end of this certificate program, you'll be able to:

  • Differentiate among neurodivergent and common mental health conditions and develop empathy for, and awareness of, the challenges faced by individuals in these communities within event environments.
  • Identify signs of distress, overwhelm, meltdown and shutdown and understand the importance of early intervention and the role of operational staff in identifying and responding.
  • Create an inclusive and supportive environment and learn practical strategies for creating a welcoming event for neurodivergent individuals and those with mental health concerns.
  • Develop communication techniques that promote understanding, active listening and respect and adapt physical spaces and event procedures to accommodate diverse needs, with consideration for sensory sensitivities and accessibility requirements.
  • Learn effective de-escalation and support techniques, acquire skills to manage high-emotion situations, ensuring the well-being of all attendees.
  • Provide compassionate support to event attendees while maintaining professional boundaries and learn how to guide event hosts to best practices and resources.

Contracting and negotiation are crucial—yet complex—roles for meeting professionals and understanding legal terminology and common contract clauses (and the liabilities they protect against) allows meeting professionals to negotiate from a position of strength. Even if you know what to look for, contracting is dynamic, and negotiation strategies change with market conditions, competition, and the economy. Solid knowledge of contract law and negotiation tactics enables meeting professionals to protect the interests of their organizations. With knowledge comes power, especially when it comes to legal matters.

Negotiating contracts involves managing financial and liability risks and protecting your business, particularly when considering the performance clauses (attrition and cancellation) that are standard in most venue contracts. No contracts are the same; words and phrasing vary and need to be carefully reviewed and edited. Sometimes, additional clauses must be added to balance the risk and liability between parties. And what of force majeure, indemnification, and the host of clauses that deal with issues that range from nuisances to calamities, such as construction and remodeling and incompatible groups?

It’s said the only right answer in the law is “it depends.” This certificate program will illustrate legal principles with examples from the news, the instructor, and your peers. Bring success and horror stories to share with other participants, enhance your legal knowledge, and fulfill your role to negotiate contracts that protect your organization from the financial and liability risks associated with your meetings and events.

You’ll Be Able To:

  • Explain the purpose of the primary contract clauses found in venue contracts.
  • Give examples of how contract language may result in financial or liability risk.
  • Prioritize issues for negotiation, determining “hot buttons” based on your meeting specifications.
  • Distinguish between contract language that is merely unfavorable and that which puts a party at significant financial or liability risk.
  • Negotiate key performance and liability clauses in at least three different ways so that the result is multiple options and not just a win-lose scenario.
  • Modify venue contracts based on knowledge of meetings contracts, meeting specifications, market conditions, and knowledge of the venue.

Curriculum details

The training will use a variety of educational methods, including:

  • Presentation
  • Lived experience from mental health field professionals and neurodivergent contributors
  • Real-world examples/case studies
