From age, race, and gender to religion, language and experience, our meetings welcome a strikingly diverse audience of individuals from increasingly diverse backgrounds. How can meeting professionals create events that offer welcoming experiences to all of our participants? It’s a question of inclusion, or the act of creating environments in which any individual or group feels welcomed, respected, supported, and valued. An inclusive climate embraces differences and offers respect in words and actions for all people. It provides the support for people to participate fully in their communities. The Spirit of Inclusion goes beyond a one-time celebration or basic legal compliance to welcome and embrace the many aspects of diversity and different perspectives that can create a powerful tool for problem-solving, innovation and success. The focus of this class is not changing individual beliefs or ideas. Our goal is to explore the topic of inclusion and its relationship to the success of events and to provide strategies and actions that you can take to create inclusive experiences. Class chapters will explore the dimensions of diversity, and the meeting professional’s role as an inclusion broker as well as more than 300 best practices for creating inclusive experiences.
1. Explain the business case for inclusion, and why creating objectives and tactics for inclusion will benefit your business or organization.
2. Use the dimensions of diversity in your event strategy and design to create fully inclusive environments.
