#RealTalk is BACK! Come engage in deep-dive conversations around the DEI topics that matter most today. This month's focus will be in recognition of Women's History Month. Our focus will be identifying obstacles women face in their path to leadership and how they were able to overcome them. The hospitality industry has an 85% representation of women overall in its workforce, however, the number of women in leadership roles is severely disproportionate by comparison.

During this session, you will...

  • Analyze ways in which societal institutions and power structures impact women’s leadership opportunities and success.
  • Be able to identify meaningful intersections between gender and other social and cultural identities.
  • Be able to identify equity strategies that create an inclusive environment building opportunities for more women in leadership.

#RealTalk is BACK! Come engage in deep-dive conversations around the DEI topics that matter most today. It’s been more than a year of conversations and awareness around the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities and the challenges that continue to be experienced. There remains, however, a proverbial “Bamboo Ceiling” for AAPI individuals still challenged by underrepresentation and lack of inclusion and voice in visible and critical industry leadership positions. Please join leading AAPI thought leaders and an ally in this important discussion to understand their experiences and to develop thinking and actions to learn to create inclusion for the AAPI and other underrepresented groups in our industry.

During this session, you will...

  • Listen to personal stories of experiences and leadership journeys of AAPI colleagues, develop a greater understanding of obstacles.
  • Become aware of barriers and methods by which we each can advance actions to leadership.
  • Set action steps with knowledge gained from the discussion to greater inclusion in the meetings and events industry for those currently underrepresented.

#RealTalk is BACK! Come engage in deep-dive conversations around the DEI topics that matter most today. For our first installment, we will be talking about the growth of DEI initiatives over the last 50 years, and a forecast on where we will see growth in the next 50.

In today’s diverse and global world, researchers emphasize individual cultural value orientations rather than placing primary emphasis on the cultural values of entire ethnic groups or nationalities. This is important because it recognizes the diversity that exists within all cultures (no national or ethnic culture is homogeneous). For example, the United States is often described as the most Individualist culture in the world, and China is often described as the most Collectivist culture in the world. But not everyone in the United States is an Individualist and not everyone in China is a Collectivist. Cultural values are also a useful way to talk about cultural differences using neutral terms, rather than pejorative ones. For example, this allows you to talk about a direct versus indirect approach to communication rather than a “rude” or “deceptive” approach.

#RealTalk is BACK! Come engage in deep-dive conversations around the DEI topics that matter most today.

Prior to the pandemic in early 2020, the medical meeting industry was already challenged with a shortage of medical meeting/event planners to service the increased number of programs over the prior years as we came out of the recession. Add to this shortage, a lack of diversity, equity & inclusion on several visual levels (i.e. race, ethnicity, age) as well as unseen disparities (i.e. physical and cultural to name a few). In this joint MPI-DEI Committee and MPI-MD Council #RealTalk, we will look at why these disparities may exist and begin to identify potential strategies to attract a more diverse group of professionals to the industry.
