2021 has seen a 250% increase in anti-transgender discriminatory bills introduced at the state level since 2017, when many people first remember hearing about “bathroom bills”. This year, 33 states have introduced more than 100 bills aiming to diminish, or completely take away, the rights of transgender people in the United States. These bills cover the right to participate in sports, use the bathroom or locker room that aligns with one’s gender identity, and in extreme cases, allows medical professionals to “opt-out” of treating transgender patients.

The meetings and hospitality industry generates over $2 trillion in economic output and provides almost 8 million jobs in the United States alone. States that pass this discriminatory legislation stand to lose billions in meetings, events, and tourism but our industry has the power, money, and connections to influence big change and stop this wave of hateful legislation from harming transgender people.

Join us for this timely conversation led by LGBTQ industry professionals on instrumentally supporting transgender people for the betterment of our events and meetings.

Learner Outcomes:

1. Attendees will learn how the industry has served as a catalyst for change on LGBT issues before and how it can be done again

2. How to better serve transgender tourists and event attendees in meaningful ways while avoiding “rainbow capitalism”

3. Understand the influence of your dollar and the message socially responsible economic spending sends
