Have you heard about the Master’s degree in Meeting and Event Management (MEM) co-created by San Diego State University and MPI? Our April 13th webinar is a chance to connect with SDSU faculty and staff and learn about the student experience from recent graduates.

The MEM Master’s program emerged through awareness that meeting and event professionals are often unrecognized and undervalued in organizations. Does your leadership team value your vision and your contribution to the organization’s results through strategic planning, complex logistics, and stakeholder management? While there are key certifications to address the operational competencies of event planning, achieving your Master’s degree in MEM demonstrates your commitment to ongoing development as a strategic leader in meeting and event management and takes your leadership to a new level. Earn your seat at the table.

Spend a semester devoted to leadership development, enhancing strengths, and building out your interpersonal competencies. Examine organizational dynamics and learn new ways to lead from the middle of the organizational chart while managing and overcoming dysfunctional systems with clear leadership vision. Delve into business coursework taught from the perspective of executive leadership and learn how to formulate sound business decisions with a focus on innovation and change initiatives to improve the organization and team performance. Marketing, Finance, Data-Driven Decision Making, and Innovation classes provide real-world and immediately applicable lessons, often completed in the context of the student’s organization. Instructors are deeply rooted in the industry and provide current industry content. Each student has a personally matched industry mentor plus a course coach to guide the mentor relationship and change initiative capstone project (no thesis required).

The program takes 18 months to complete in an online, executive education format with an expected time commitment of 10 hours per week. There are (2) intensive on-campus weeks in San Diego to develop relationships and provide exercises in group dynamics and problem solving. Upon successful completion of the prescribed 30 units of coursework, matriculated graduate students have earned graduate credit and are awarded a Master of Science degree from San Diego State University through the L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality & Tourism Management.

Launched in Fall 2019, inaugural cohort members graduated in December 2020 and are reporting career growth and opportunities to flex a newly developed skillset. Many have taken on new responsibilities and roles. Studying through a worldwide pandemic has provided confidence that innovating in an uncertain marketplace with an enhanced toolbelt can make any business problem an opportunity for improvement and growth.

We welcome students from broad educational and professional backgrounds, working in corporations, associations, higher education, third party agencies, supplier partners, and beyond. We value all types of diversity and seek to build a strong dialogue with varied perspectives and experiences. Most students are admitted as matriculated graduate students to earn a Master’s degree and others may be considered to study on a certificate basis depending on depth of experience. The achievement of a Master’s is recognized for life and there are no renewal requirements. Cohorts are considered full at approximately 30 students, allowing for a highly interactive and personalized learning experience and meaningful network development among cohort-mates.

Webinar Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will learn the minimum requirements and touchpoints for applying to the MEM Master’s program.
  • Participants will be able to identify the benefits the Master’s program provides.
  • Participants will be able to distinguish the Master's from other industry designations.
